MULTIMEDIA APPLIANCES: HYBRID DEVICES

As the lines blur between devices, we will find that hybrid devices emerge to find their niche in our lives. Will the TV just be a TV in the future? Will the phone remain just a phone, or do the appliances of today get morphed into something else? The first stage is the development of hybrid devices which combine two or more existing ones.

Computer-Based Video Phone

The telephone is easily incorporated into many different devices. We already have answering machines, fax machines, and computers that all connect to the phone line. Video phones are already on the horizon. AT&T offers a video phone today that works over conventional telephone lines. This relies heavily on real-time encoding (compression) and decoding (decompression) of the audio and video as well as sophisticated modern technology to make this product happen.

Similar capability is now being offered on plug-in boards to provide video conferencing from the computer desktop. The next step is to build this functionally into portable computers and add the software services to provide personal communications management.

Computer-Based Consumer Entertainment Products

When it comes to entertainment products, the lines get very burly. Is it a computer, a T.V, a VCR, a game machine, or all of the above? Entertainment will come in many different forms, but will resolve around what we now consider to be the TV set. Interactive TV products could play a pivotal role in bringing all of these technologies together.

Until the technology is more economically priced, it appears that the end user will want to do more with these devices. Exposing the underlying computer technology to the user, who then can add applications software for education, personal management, or many other uses, is one way to increase its utility. Having these boxes communicate with other appliances in the home provides additional utility, but we are just seeing the beginning of this. A box such as CD-I or CDTV will allow your TV to become an information terminal into the world, assuming that it has the connections to the outside world.

Input technology: portability and new interaction Modes

People are always looking for a better user interface to new technology- a user interface that will be intuitive person. The trick is that the definition of the average person is changing. People are being exposed to computer technology at a younger age. Telephone answering machines, fax machines, infrared remote controls, home computers, calculators, bar code scanners in the supermarket, 24-hour automated teller machines, and credit cards, to name a few, have daily impact on our lives as grow more and more accustomed to new technology.

Pointing and clicking has revolutionized PCs and will continue to be the preferred human interface for PCs for some time to come. Digital signal processing (DSP) technology, besides bringing excellent computational power for compression and decompression, can also provide voice processing, such as voice synthesis and voice recognition. The kind of voice interaction with computers that you night see in a Star Trek movie may not be that far from the truth in the future.

Companies like AT&T Bell Laboratories are already well on their way to providing this raw capability in everyday applications. The key needed to open this technology to everyday applications is in designing the right software model for DSP. AT&T has developed a DSP operating system called VCOS. VCOS is a real-time multitasking kernel with a full complement of high-level DSP algorithms for speech recognition, speech synthesis, modems, audio compression, video compression, music synthesizers, and many others.

Touch screens have been around for some time, but have not been really been widely accepted except in kiosk applications. Pen computing is a new type of application for touch screens with portable LCD devices. In these applications, the use writes on LCD with a Stylus. The touch screen digitizes this writing, and the computer attempts to recognize the writing and convert to letters, numbers, or even graphics.

Presentation Technology in LCD

Color LCDs are fairly new. Digital watches and calculations were the first commercial use of LCDs in large volume. Calculators and watches require displays with very few segments, which are easy to make. For TV or computer displays, a dot matrix displays is needed. Dot matrix displays require a much larger number of segments or pixels. To keep the electronics economical, each dot must be multiplexed at 100:1 or 200:1. This multiplexing of dots has the result of lowering the contrast of the display, since each dot is not individually driven. To improve contrast, LCD manufacturers have devised ways of improving the liquid crystal materials.

In a normal LCD, the liquid crystal material is placed between two planes of glass (one etched with row conductors, the other etched with column conductors) rotated 90 degrees against a polarizing film to cause a black and white difference. Different polarizing films can be used to get different color LCDs. In Super Twist LCDs, the liquid crystal material rotates 270 degrees.

In Double Super Twist displays, two layers of liquid crystal material rotate 270 degrees between three planes of glass or sometimes plastic.

This trick improves the contrast, but at the expense of response time. In a computer application, this gives the effect of a long persistence phosphor, or a smearing effect. In some cases, the response time is so long that fast moving elements (like a cursor) will completely disappear, until they stop moving. To combat this effect, the effective matrix was developed.

In an active matrix displays, a thin film transistor is actually deposited on the glass, thereby providing an individual driver transistor for each pixel. This improves contrast and response time dramatically at the expense of a more complicated glass process.

By far the most expensive element of an LCD display is not the cost of the glass but the cost of driver chips. A monochrome 640 ×480 display may have as many as 28 driver chips, each with 100 leads. Extrapolate this the color of LCDs: now you need three times the numbers of pixels- one each red, green, and blue. Next add a tremendously bright black light to be able to see through all the layers. Then add active matrix circuitry to prevent smearing of the videos. Making color LCDs is no simple process.

In the late 1980s, the first commercial use of color active matrix LCDs in a consumer product was for a small, the yields were sufficient to allow a cost-effective display for a consumer-period portable TV comparable to CRTs.

The applications for video will be expanding in the next decade due to its digital future, and hence will create the necessary for improved presentation technology. Color LCD displays from postage is much more mature and less expensive, LCDs will have their day. From DICK Tracy TV watches to home projection TV theatres to Star Trek-like touch screen notebooks, it’s all coming.

The CRT technology contained in most color TV sets and computer monitors is fairly well known. There are red, green, and blue dots, slots, or stripes (depending on the tube manufacturer) that are modulated in an analog fashion to give the desired color picture. TV sets usually have a dot pitch of approximately 0.6 mm. Cheap computer monitors will have a dot pitch of 0.42 mm or 0.39 mm. standard grade VGA monitors usually have a dot pitch of 0.31 mm or 0.28 mm. some expensive monitors have even finer dot pitch. The smaller the dot pitch the higher the resolution.

For instance, a TV set can only display an image of 320×200, whereas a VGA monitor can display 640×480 and large 21″ monitors with 0.28 dot pitch can display images as large as 1280×1024. This is fairly well established technology and it is not likely to change drastically in the years ahead. Making large tubes with small dot pitches is a fairly tricky business, similar to silicon wafer fabrication. The yield must be very high. If just one pixel is bad on a CRT, the entire tube must be scrapped. In the years ahead, the major R&D investment in CRT’s will be in improving yields of large CRT’s in anticipation of a market for wide-screen HDTV TV sets. From a CRT point of view, HDTV changes the aspect ratio of 4:3 to 16:9, but the underlying process technology is the same.

Presentation Technology in Laptop

Laptop computers have had a major impact on the development of larger LCDs. In this case the displays must have a resolution of at least 640 ×480 with at least a 9″ diagonal size. Strictly black and white displays is required as a minimum. New LCD controller ICs were developed to achieve this gray scale performance by tightly controlling the linear region of the display. Segments (which are inherently nonlinear). More recently there has been a driver to bring down the price of VGA sized color LCDS, but they are still quite pricey and power hungry compared to monochrome displays. If the technology becomes cost competitive with CRTs, then will be relegated to products where people will pay a premium price for a small package such as a laptop computer.

TECHNOLOGY TRENDS

Multimedia devices and communications are becoming practical because of trends in electronics, telecommunications and displays. The continued progression of these technologies will play a determining role in what can be achieved in the next decade.

Elements: increasing Circuit Density

Besides co-founding Intel with Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore is probably best known in the semiconductor world for his profound prediction in 1964 of the growth rate of semiconductors. Mr. Moore predicted that the numbers of transistors on a chip will double every three years. While I can remember many years where I was sure that Moor’s Law would fall, it rarely has. Andrew Rappaport of the Technology Research Group at the 1990 Microprocessor Forum took this one step further. Mr. Rappaport stated that silicon is free. While many semiconductors vendors may disagree with this comment (others may say that the silicon is free, but the package the silicon goes into is not!), Mr. Rappaport’s claim is that technology has progressed so far that instead of being limited by the technology, we are limited by our ability to fill all of the available silicon with good ideas.

Communication: increasing Bandwidth and Switching Speed

Due to the advance in digital signal processing techniques, it is possible to produce low-cost 9600-baud V.32 modems. What is perhaps silly about this is that modem technology is trying to cope with phone lines from the 1950s, when in actuality the Bell System has not been standing still all these years. If the phone company’s trunks are already digital, why not tap into them directly?

One way is with a technology called Data Kit developed at Bell Labs. With a more appropriate (and lower tech) modems, it is possible to get 9600 baud (or better) full duplex data on the same twisted pair of phone wire and have this data be completely independent of the phone voice signal. It’s a low-end ISDN. The proposed ADSAL “Video Dial tone” service should work in a similar way, but at much higher bit rates and with modems that are much more expensive.

The largest leap forward in communications bandwidth, thought, is available with fiber optics, which, while requiring the replacement of the existing wiring, will lead to orders of magnitude more data capacity. A switching fabric for fiber optic data rates, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), is making gigabit rate packet switched fiber networks feasible. ATM is the basis for Broadband ISDN (B-ISDN) discussed in Chapter 13 and has also been proposed as the basis for future fiber optic CATV networks.

WHAT IS MULTIMEDIA?

The concepts behind what is emerging today date back to over four decades to a series of visionary thinkers who foresaw the evolution of computers towards richer personalized devices that would become an extension of the individual. In 1945 Vannevar Bush, then the director of the office of Scientific Research and Development in the U.S. government, suggested that one of the future devices available for individuals would be a memex. The memex would initially be an associative device, so that related items could be easily located.

Today, the linking of associated data for easy access is called hypertext, a term coined by Ted Nelson, or hypermedia, when any type of media form can be linked. It is the simultaneous use of data in different media forms (voice, video, text, animations, etc.) that is called multimedia. Digital media and audio media are the most demanding of the new media that are being added to the repertoire of computing and communications systems.

Because of their time-sampled nature, these types of media are frequently referred to as continuous media (CM)The term multimedia computing commonly refers to the use of multimedia data types in computer applications and systems, and multimedia communications denotes communications systems which support the real-time transmission of continuous media.

EARLY HYPERTEXT AND COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH

The idea of linking relating information gave impetus to Ted Nelson and Dough Englebart, who separately conceived and development the first computerized versions of hypertext-style editing systems. In 1968 Englebart demonstrated the NLS system developed at SRI, which had interactive multiperson editing, branching to different files, text search facilities, and outline processing. In the late 1960s, Ted Nelson and Andries van Dam collaborated at Brown University to develop a hypertext editing system on IBM 360. A fourth-generation system developed at Brown, inter-media, has continued this research and includes animation and video tools.

MULTIMEDIA AND PERSONALIZED COMPUTERS

In 1967, Nicholas Negroponate formed the Architecture Machine Group in the Architecture Department at MIT. Although the initial goal was to use computers for architectural design, a new focus developed: that of making computers easier to use.

Spatial data management system

In early 1976, the Architecture Machine Group proposed a research program to the U.S. Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) entitled “Augmentation of Human Resource In Command and Control through Multimedia Media Man-Machine interaction.” A basic precept of the project would be the use of spatial cues to aid in task performance and memory. Information organization would be tied to locality, and the user interface would include a large wall-size display and an octaphonic sound system to provide spatial audio cues. The user would access a data item by in the space could be text, graphics, videos, or active procedures.

The Spatial Data Management System (SDMS) was a major step toward moving the computer interface away form the conventional video display terminal to one which was close to human perceptual space. The SDMS media room contained an instrumented Eames chair, large projection screen, and side view video screens. While seated in the chair, the user could use joysticks, a touch screen, or stylus. These controls were used to navigate through the information space viewed on the large screen, which acted as a window to the data space. one of the side view monitors provided a continuous top-level view of the information landscape.

The first version of the system organized the space hierarchically, with lower levels reachable via ports. SDMS II used a single global space and zooming could be used to inspect an object in grater detail. While navigating the space, auditory cues provided a sense of direction and distance from an object. Later, voice-based navigation and control were added to the system.
